Master of Vessel 100 Tons license

This Master of Vessels 100 Ton class is the OUPV class withte Master Upgrade. Successful completion of this class and exam allows the student to apply for a Master license up to 100 tons based on your experience. With this Master's license, you will be able to operate an inspected vessel with more than six passengers.

For a Master's license up to 100 tons, the mariner must:
● Be at least 19 years old for Inland/Great Lake; 21 year old for Near Coastal
● Be a U.S. Citizen
● Speak and understand English
● Be able to get TWIC
Have required sea service - 360 days inland & 720 days near coastal. 90 days must have been logged in the last 3 years
● The tonnage on your license depends on your sea service. One day on a vessel over 5 gross tons gets you a 50 ton masters license; 180 days on a vessel over 34 gross tons or 90 days on a vesssel over 51 gross tons gets you a 100 ton license. Remember for near coastal thsee number double.
There are six proctored exams
- Rules of the Road, fifty questions 90% correct
- Plotting, ten questions 70% correct
- Navigation General, twenty questions 70% correct
- Deck General, twenty questions, 70% correct
- Deck Safety and Environmental, 70 questions 70%

For USCG students, please note: our Rules of the Road exam can be used for Deck Watch Officer credentials, but DWO does not count for the rules exam. This is a NMC policy.

STCW Basic Training (BT) Revalidation (Formally called Basic Safety Training)

This Basic Safety Training revalidation course is approved by the NMC as follows

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Training Revalidation
(EXP LGU-718) course will satisfy the minimum standard of competence in personal survival
techniques and fire prevention and fire fighting of Table A-VII1-! and Table A-VI/l-2 of the
STCW Code, as amended, provided he or she has been previously certified per Section VIII
of the STCW Code, as amended, and presents evidence of 1 year of sea service within the
past 5 years.

This is not a Basic Training refresher course. That course is a four day course. With the full course only one day longer, we do not offer the Basic Training Refresher class.

 

Examination: Complete the competencies in the pool and fire tower

 Requirements: for the Basic Safety Training Certificate, the mariner must:

● Have attended STCW Basic Safety Training within the previous five (5) years 

● Possess a valid Merchant Mariner Credential.

With this one weekend course your credentials can be upgrade to Master's 25, 50, or 100-ton which permits you to captain an inspected vessel depending on your sea service.

  • 14 Hours classroom
  • Classroom normally is a Saturday and Sunday
  • Be at least 19 years old for Inland/Great Lake
  • Sea Service same as OUPV
  • Tonnage on your credentials depends on sea service.
    • If the applicant has 1 day of service BEFORE March 24, 2014 on a vessel greater than 5 GRT, the MMC may be issued for 50 GRT without meeting this tonnage calculation . (This grandfather clause ends in 2019)
    • <Otherwise 50 ton requires 90 days (25%) of service of vessels of 26 GRT or above,
      OR 180 days (50%) of service on vessels 17 GRT or above.
    • 100 Ton required 180 days on a vessel over 34 gross tons or 90 days on a vessel over 51 gross tons gets you a 100 ton license.

Fee:$335 includes course materials, instruction, one sitting of the one final proctored exam, and Certificate of Completion. Course approved for GI Bill, Post 911 GI Bill, Diabled veterans.

Is it time to upgrade your OUPV license to 100 Ton Masters License? Explorer's Guide Maritime Academy has the course to do just that.  Our 100 Ton Masters License Upgrade can be taken in the classroom. Your sea service determines both the route and tonnage for your license. The routes include Inland and Great Lakes.

The tonnage of the vessel you can operate also depends on size of the vessel you served on. Tonnage ratings include 25, 50, or 100-ton Master captains license.

Sea service:

  • for an Inland or Great Lake is the same as your oupv - 360 days with at least 90 days on the Great Lakes and at least 90 days of sea service on any waters within the last three year

Tonnage:

  • Everyone get at least a 25 ton endorsement.
  • 50 ton requires 90 days (25%) of service of vessels of 26 GRT or above, OR 180 days (50%) of service on vessels 17 GRT or above.
  • For a 100 ton master Inland or Great Lakes, you need 180 days on a vessel over 34 gross tons or 90 days on a vessel over 51 gross tons.
