The USCG-Approved OUPV class for Captains License for Inland & Great Lakes lets you take 6 passengers for-hire, plus crew, on your vessel. It was designed specifically for Captains working and boating on either the Inland or Great Lakes, and focuses on what you actually need to boat on these waters. Simplified plotting and no International Rules makes both the learning process and the exams less stressful.
Classes are available in both online and classroom settings.
Scheduled OUPV class Classroom are held in Appleton WI, Milwaukee WI, St Paul NM, Sturgeon Bay WI, Chicago IL, Grass Valley CA, Las Vegas NV, Hilo HI
Course fee $645 while others in Wisconsin charge as much as $1,445 for the same course

48 classroom hours. (I suggest study time between the two weekends.) - OUPV Inland Great Lakes - 6 Pack Captains License courses available in a classroom or online format -
Typical Classroom Schedule: Thursday and Friday evenings, and all day Saturday and Sunday for two weekends $645 Inland Great Lakes and $695 for Near Coastal.
Online Course Schedule: Available 24/7 + proctored exam. This course is National Maritime Center-approved for original issuance, renewal, and re-issuance of a merchant mariner credential as an Operator of Uninspected Vessels (OUPV) Inland/Great Lakes.
Tuition: $595, includes all course materials (manual, plotting tools, charts, rules book) and one sitting of your proctored exam.
Lessons are divided into four modules, just like the exams:
Navigation Rules of the Road;
Plotting - Charts, Fixes and Running Fixes, Dead Reckoning, Distance Off, Electronic Navigation, and Magnetic Compass;
Navigation General - Weather, Tides, Aids to Navigation, Publications; and
Deck General, Safety and Environmental - Marlinspike Seamanship, Vessel Maneuvering and Handling, Small Engines, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Emergency Procedures, Maritime Law, Shipboard Management and Training, Ship’s Business, Communications, and Lifesaving Appliances.
Most OUPV - 6 Pack Captains license classes through Explorers Guide Maritime Academy are held in: ● Appleton, WI ● Sturgeon Bay, WI ● Milwaukee, WI ● Minneapolis, MN area ● Hilo HI
● Grass Valley, CA. However, our instructors often schedule additional classes in other locations. And, we will travel to other locations if we have 10 or more students. Please contact us for more information.
Our classroom classes are approved by Wisconsin State Approving Agency for GI Bill. This includes any classes held in Wisconsin.
License Requirements: The minimum requirements for the OUPV Inland/Great Lakes - 6 Pack Captains License are: ● Be at least 18 years old. You can take the course at age 17 and apply for the license on your 18th birthday. ● Be a U.S. Citizen ● Speak English ● Be TWIC eligible - Please check the TWIC site if you have any convictions. Have required sea service (a day is a minimum of four hours underway) - At least a total of 360 days - 90 days in the last 3 years. This is called recency. - For the Great Lakes endorsement, you need at least 90 days of the 360 day on the Great Lakes.
There are four exams you are required to pass to earn your OUPV Inland Great Lakes - 6 Pack Captains License. If you fail one exam module, you can retake that exam two more times. If you fail the exam a third time, you will be required to repeat the class. This is the National Maritime Center's directive.
Rules of the Road (30 questions): Need 27 correct.
Plotting (10 questions): Need 7 correct.
Navigation General (20 questions): Need 14 correct.
Deck General, Safety, and Environmental (60 questions): Need 42 correct. If you follow along in class and do a little added studying at home, you have a high percentage of passing these exams the first time.

PLEASE NOTE: If you take this class and do not have the required sea service time for the Great Lakes route, your license will be approved for the Inland route. If, in the future, you want to upgrade to Great Lakes route, you will be required to reapply for for a change in route.
